The creamy texture, the subtle flavors and the richness combine on the palate to make dessert truly the great finish to the meal. You might be tempted at some point, however, to explore a simpler way to make your cheesecake. The baked cheesecake recipe, while simple, can be unforgiving at times, and it only takes a couple of failures to send even the most intrepid of home cooks looking for alternatives. What they soon find, however, is that there really is no adequate substitute for the creamy richness of the baked version. There are no-bake cheesecake recipes in great supply on the Internet, and you are more than welcome to be adventurous and try one. Before you serve one to your dinner guests, however, you would be well advised to make one just for in-home consumption. Why? According to the American Medical Women’s Association, this includes 5 million women, many of whom will quit or loss their jobs directly due to the depression. Symptoms of depression include emotional elements such as restlessness or loss of pleasure, or physical elements like headaches, aches, and pains. These symptoms result in a lowered ability to work, sleep, eat, study, or enjoy pleasurable activities. By Bonnie Lowe When you’re looking to get hired or get promoted, what do you think is your most important asset? Your experience? Knowledge? Skill? Talent? While all of those are advantages that will help you achieve your goals, there’s one thing that’s more important than all of them combined. Your attitude! I attended a board meeting recently. It should’ve been spelled “bored.” Just about everyone’s eyes were glazed over or nearly closed with fatigue as one dull presentation after another was foisted upon the board members, staff and audience. Then something changed. Someone who had never spoken at a board meeting before got up, went to the lectern, fired up her PowerPoint presentation, and totally blew everyone away! People perked up in their seats and listened attentively to her every word. When she was done, people clapped! (If you’ve ever attended a public agency board meeting before, you’ll know how remarkable that is!) The board president said, “I’ve seen hundreds of presentations. Her enthusiasm was contagious, so the audience greatly enjoyed listening to facts and figures that, presented by someone without her energetic attitude, would’ve bored them to tears. Everyone in that room will remember and think very highly of her–not the more experienced, knowledgeable, skilled or talented presenters–because of her attitude. You know why companies conduct time-consuming, labor-intensive job interviews instead of simply hiring people based on the qualifications presented in their resumes? By Adam Dudley Hiring a personal trainer can be an anxiety producing experience! Hiring a personal trainer is expensive and your concerned because you want the most bang for your buck. In other words you want results and you want to get those results as soon as possible, but you dont want to hurt yourself in the process. As in any other profession, there are good personal trainers, a few bad ones, and some nightmares!!! As a fitness and weight loss professional for the past five years Ive seen it allthe good, the bad and the ugly. So you see, I feel that its now my duty to reveal the Truth about Trainers and to make sure you get the bestand more importantlyavoid the worst! What do all those credentials and degrees really mean? Credentials mean nothing and the reason I say this is because when I graduated with my exercise science degree from the University of Florida, and I passed the National Strength and Conditioning Associations certification exam (one of the toughest in the industry), I knew absolutely NOTHING about working with clients and getting them results. This is an completely unregulated industry were talking about here, no licensing, no state certification, no national certification, and over 75 certifying organizations for personal trainers. You could get a trainer that completed a weekend study course or one that has a Ph.D. in exercise physiology. Now of course youre asking So Adam, If credentials mean nothing, how do I evaluate a trainer? The answer is simple Proof. Proof. Proof. 1. Proof in the form of at least 3 client testimonials or success stories. 2. Proof in the form of at least 3 fitness related professional references. 3. Proof in the form of publications they have written. 4. And finallyProof in the form of actual before and after pictures making it crystal clear that they know how to get the results. If the trainer can provide you with 2 out of 3 of these forms of proof then youve got a winner and be willing to pay a premium for their servicesotherwise move the heck on because these trainers do exist. Adam, What about private v. semi-private v. small group training? Small group training and semi-private training are two of the fastest growing trends in the personal training industry. There is one simple reason for thisprofit. Yes, it may seem like youre getting a deal with semi-private and small group training, but what kind of a deal is the trainer getting??? Lets look at a simple example Lets say that Im a trainer who charges $65 per session for private, one-on-one training and I decide to begin offering small group training (typically 3 to 6 people training at the same time). Each person training in the small group will pay me $20 per sessionnot bad right? Now look at it this waythat same trainer has now increased his per session rate by $55 to $120and you are no longer getting the private one-on-one attention that you would otherwise. Great deal for the trainer but what about YOU??? Now, in no way am I suggesting that you wont get outstanding results by working in a group rather than training one-on-one. Because reports and testimonial have shown that semi-private and small group training can sometimes be more effective than one-on-one training. The bottom line is that if you want to know whats going on behind the scenes then you need to know why the industry is moving in the direction of semi-private and small group training and the answer is leverage! If you decide to go with small group or semi-private training, I strongly suggest that you dont pay for a large package of sessions up front. The reason Im telling you to do this is because you might find out after the first session that group training is not right for you. Adam, Are there any trainers that actually guarantee results? The answer is yes and you shouldnt hire a trainer that wont agree to give you 100% of your money back if you do not achieve the results you desire. This is just another way for a trainer to show what they can do, and shows they stand behind their work. There is a catch however that any smart fitness professional would include with their money back guaranteethat catch is that you must keep up your end of the bargain by doing what the trainer says, and if you dontthe guarantee is void. And I think this is fair. What about rates??? Adam, What about rates for hour v. half hour sessions? Average rates are a difficult subject because its really dependant on where you live. Here in Central Florida, where I live, I would say the average rates are between $50 and $60 per hour and $25 and $45 per half hour. Now, if you want to look at South Beach, Miamithe average rates for an hour are more like $75 and $100 and half hour sessions run $55 to $75. Butthats South Beach. Again, if you are evaluating a trainer that has several of the 4 forms of proof that I gave you previously, be willing to pay a premium because you are guaranteed results. The truth about half hour sessions v. hour sessions is this Honestly, for most people, an entire hour is just way too long to spend training. A good trainer can get you the same results, in 30 minutes than they could in 60 minutes. But if they really, really push the houryou should be concerned about their skill level and are they just trying to make more money. Again, unless you are a real body builder or an athlete with some intense physical challenge ahead of youhour sessions are just too much. Go for the half hour!!! If a trainer tells you this, run like heck!!! My Big Fat Greek Miracle - A Family Physician Steps on the Scales and Takes a Swing at Weight Loss

By Nicholas Yphantides After a long day of seeing patients at the community health clinic, Dr. Nick Yphantides (whos Greek name is pronounced Eee-fahn-tee-dees) liked to reward himself by driving through his favorite fast-food joint, In-N-Out Burger, and ordering a 4 by 4, large fries, and a Coke. The 4 by 4four hamburgers and four slices of American cheese stacked in a hamburger bun with all the sauce and trimmings, plus the deep-fried fries and 16-ounce Cokecontained 1,400 calories and 100 grams of fat, but that didnt bother Dr. Nick a twit. In his mind, the drive-thru forays were just a snack, something to eat before dinner. He was hungry and fat. Dr. Nick had been gaining mounds of weight ever since medical school, when he fortified his late-night study sessions with Ding-Dongs and heaping bowls of Rocky Road ice cream. During interminable forty-hour shifts as an intern, he kept up his energy by raiding the hospital canteen, where someone had set out a plate of sweets to be shared by the attending staff. When he entered the public health arena as a family physician, he could be best described as corpulent. He couldnt tell you how much he weighed, though, because he had stopped weighing himself. His expanding girth actually turned into an occupational blessing: his patients viewed Nick as a larger-than-life advocate for the poor, the big man with a big heart who cared for his community in a big way. Overweight patients loved Dr. Nick because they knew they would receive tea and sympathy from someone who also shopped at Mr. Big and Tall. From a doctors perspective, he was always gracious with people who struggled with their weight. More than a few times, he looked a heavyset woman or fat fellow in the eye and said with a smile, Do as I say, not as I do. Jolly St. Nick Shortly after he turned 30 years of age, however, Dr. Nick began experiencing declining health and a host of unusual symptoms that led him to a doctors examination room. A week later, he learned the bad news: he had testicular cancer. The surgical excision of the right testes and aggressive radiation over 12 weeks saved his lifeand caused some soul-searching. The way Nick saw it, he had dodged the cancer bullet, but there was another round in the chamber: his gargantuan weight had to be causing incredible amounts of stress on his organsheart, lung and liver, as well as his skeletal frame. He wondered how much stress he was putting on his knees, which were bearing such a severe load. One day, Nick stood on two scalesone for each foot. Each needle came to rest on 233 1/2. A fourth-grader could do the math: Dr. Nick Yphantides, the jolly doc with the Santa Claus-like image, weighed in at a hefty 467 pounds. Nick was scared. His cancer had forced him to face his mortality, and now he was sure that each bite of an In-N-Out 4×4 brought him one swallow closer to the grave. Something needed to be done. Nick was tired of dressing in XXXXL T-shirts and tent-sized gym pants, tired of booking uncrowded red-eye flights so that he wouldnt have to buy a second seat, tired of gawkers staring at his monstrous midsection in restaurants. Ahead of him was a future filled with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and debilitating diabetesunless he made a radical lifestyle change and lost a ton of weight. Well, maybe not a ton, but 200 pounds would be a good start, he figured. In April 2000, Nick gave a one-year notice that he would be stepping down and leaving the Escondido Community Health Center. Then he began formulating a game plan. Since he wasnt going to work, he needed something to doa diversion to keep his mind off being so hungry. Thats it! Nick loved baseball (or was it those ballpark franks?), so he decided to drive around the country and visit all 30 major league ballparks and watch baseball games. He calculated that he had been consuming 5,600 calories a day to maintain his weight. To lose weight slowly but surely, he would embark on a liquid fastdrinking a protein supplement offering just 800 calories a day. On April 1, 2001, Nick sailed off in a used RV a vehicle he christened the USS Spirit of Reduction with the intention of becoming half the man he used to be. His father rode shotgun. Going cold turkey from food gave Nick the shakes, just like any junkie coming down off a high. I was so hungry that I would have eaten a cigarette butt dipped in mustard, he said. Two cities known for their gastronomical delights were particularly painful to visit: Kansas City, for its butter-fried steaks; and New Orleans, for its Cajun-style fish and shrimp. At times the only thing that kept him going, he said, was knowing that hundreds of people back home had pledged varying amounts of money for every pound he lostmoney that would go to the Escondido Community Healthy Center and the California Center for the Arts. That unique accountability contributed toward helping Nick accomplish the goal he set out for. Battling His Lowest Point At first, the pounds melted off Dr. Nick like a snowman standing in the Sahara desertseventeen pounds in the first week. After that initial surge of encouragement, his weight loss went from a gusher to a steady drip-drip as he continued to drink protein shakes flavored with diet root beers and diet Orange Crush soft drinks. In Seattle on July 2, he had his weekly weigh-in under a doctors supervision. That day, he learned that he had lost 103 pounds in three months, or an average of 1.1 pounds per day. While that was a lot of weight, it didnt feel like much to him. When he looked in a mirror, he couldnt even detect a difference in his appearance. He was still wearing the same Dr. Nick T-shirts that he wore Opening Day at Dodger Stadium. He had to admit they were a bit looser, but all he saw in the mirror was the same old mound of human flesh. Nick fell into a funk.On July 4, he found himself in Sitka, Alaska, where he had planned a daylong fishing trip with his brother John and two friends. He woke up at 4:30 a.m. feeling sorry for himself. He resented skinny people. Why were they thin and he was fat? What had he done to deserve his fate? Why did he feel such despair? With a dark cloud following him, Nick and his brothers boarded a fishing boat at dawn to fish for salmon and halibut. After catching their limits of salmon inside the bay, the boat motored into deeper waters to catch the really big fishAlaskan halibut. Leaving the safety of the bay, Nick thought that day, was a metaphor for what he was going through with his weight-loss odyssey. His weight had become such a monumental dilemma in his life that he had to leave the comfort of the bay and drive toward deep, choppy waters to seek the big catch of a healthy existence. No one caught a big one until late in the afternoon, when . . . Nick had a strike! His rod bounced off the railing, but he held on tight. He yanked with all his strength and cranked the reel as fast as he could. For the next forty-five minutes, he kept dipping the rod and reeling, dipping and reeling. Finally, the captain gaffed the monster halibut and helped Nick pull it onto the boat. Nick, his last reserves of energy spent, leaned against the rail, wowed by the excitement of catching a fish that size. The captain weighed the fish, which was nearly as tall as Nick59 inches. Its 103 pounds, he announced. Nick was stunned. What did you say? One hundred and three pounds. The weight of that Alaskan halibut 103 pounds exactly matched the weight Dr. Nick had lost since April 1. Everything came together for him at that moment because something unspeakable had occurred. To Nick, it was a confirmation that he was on the right track, that he was right where he needed to be in his weight-loss journey. As pictures were snapped, he felt the same sense of awe that he felt when he stood in front of Michelangelos David and the Sistine Chapel on a trip to Italy. He couldnt even articulate what was going through his mind, but it was a jumble of bewilderment, love, confirmation and validation. He knew he had been lifted from the depths of despair. This experience became the deciding moment of his trip, but more than that, the defining moment of his life. Gobble, Gobble When Nick returned home in time for Thanksgiving, his mother was shocked by his appearance. Some of his nieces and nephews didnt even recognize him. Nick, now weighing 269 pounds, had shed nearly 200 pounds. He ate his first solid food in nearly eight months on Thanksgiving Day: some vegetables and a baked potato. He continued to lose weight as he returned to solid food and his medical practice. Nick reached his low-water mark the following summer, when he weighed a svelte 197. The end of his long weight-loss trip was just a beginning, Nick learned. Now he would have to work at keeping the pounds off. Today, Nick weighs 220 pounds, and he has remained steady at that weight for three years. Everywhere he goes to tell his story, people clamor for advice how they can lose weight as well. In response, Dr. Nick developed the following bedrock principles: Dr. Nicks Seven Pillars of Weight Loss I. Change the way you see before you change the way you look. Fundamental to addressing ones health issues is addressing the cause. Permanent weight loss is impossible without a permanent lifestyle change. II. The economy is quite robust considering the housing market dip and the auto-industry, high fuel prices, trade deficits and rising interest rates. In fact the economy is so strong no one can understand why it just keeps moving like it is. Good for us all in the here and now; that is to say in the present period, but for how long will it all last? And what about future periods? Well, if and when the Democrats get into office they will raise your taxes and increase social spending making people weak and thus further destroying work ethic. The Democrats will further increase regulation on top of the current over regulation driving businesses off shore and preventing foreign investment. By Paul Lemberg How much of your marketing is reaching your prospects where it counts? Are they acting upon your call to action? Are they thinking about your message - at least a little bit? Are they even reading it, at all? A lot of what passes for advertising and marketing today bounces off your prospects because the messaging is weak. “Messaging” is a fancy marketing term for the guts of what you are trying to tell people. Your core message announces to the world all the wonderful things your product, service or company can do for them, why it’s a great thing they cannot live without, and why they absolutely must choose you instead of someone else. Your messaging is impotent when it just isn’t saying anything anyone cares about. Even you. It is falling upon deaf ears and missing the mark by a mile. The following seven cost-effective steps will help insure that yours hits your target. 1. Personally revisit your core message with fresh eyes and ears. Do this even if you’ve done it recently. Think about what you are saying and make sure it is the message you want to communicate. Read it out loud to make sure it sounds the way you want it to. 2. Test your message on real live people to make sure it gets across what you want it to communicate. Have them feed it back to you, in their own words. Is it something they care about? Something they have a passion for? A need for? A desire for? Do this with a mix of existing customers and not-yet customers in your target market. 3. Look at the methods you’re using to communicate that core message. Focus on the benefits, and the benefits of the benefits. Often a lot of good communication gets lost in products, features, and functions. Clarify and eliminate all the distractions. Use this tactic: Examine your website, one sheets and brochures-print them and yellow highlight the words that speak to your core message. Most people are shocked to see they don’t communicate that core message very well…or they do it almost as an afterthought, like a little phrase under the logo or something like that. Your core message has to permeate your documents. Don’t be too subtle! 4. Launch an assault on your marketing materials. Don’t change them all-focus on those that most frequently get used in your business. The marketing idiots who say “We have to redo all our literature!”? Fire them. Replace them with someone who says, “You know, I think that we can get our message across if we just re-work this one and that one, and leave the rest alone.” 5. Set up a system that gives feedback to let you know if your message is reaching home. The simplest way to tell is if people are “taking action on your call to action.” (If they aren’t pursuing you, you know you are not getting through to them.) Note: This applies to any medium, even “in-store.” If you have a retail location, you have to test in your store, using whatever marketing you have available to you. Continually test and hone your message so that it does work. 6. Create an email capability that lets you communicate with your clientele on a continual basis in a way they will value. And just as in “off-line,” don’t send them self-aggrandizing garbage! Only send meaningful communications that provide something real for your clients and prospects. 7. Develop a customer communications calendar - a mixed media marketing calendar that ensures your audience is receiving your message often enough to keep you in mind. If your goal is to touch your clients monthly, every six weeks, or quarterly, maybe even weekly - make sure you are mailing, e-mailing, calling, visiting, throwing-a-party-for- even sending them flowers - doing something, touching them some way-on that basis. Pointing fingers and looking “outside”, rather than “inside”, when facing unpleasant outcomes, is a sign of emotional immaturity and lack of self-responsibility. In relationship, blaming others is a lose-lose equation. The blamer remains defiant, in denial, overtly or passively aggressive and inconsiderate, while the blamed often reacts with guilt, shame, resistance, resentment, confusion, frustration, anger, and/or isolation. Blame is a red flag, devoid of genuine understanding and the real working through of conflict resolution. In a “conscious” relationship, partners are cognizant of the needs hidden in their blaming and are open to expressing these needs to one another. Blame is often an indication that the one who is blaming is crying out to have some need (or needs) met. The person who is blaming is relating as a victim and a child, challenged by feeling helpless, fearful and out of control. Blame is the way an adult “cries like a child.” It’s an attention-getting device, i.e., underneath the blame is an attempt to gain some degree of recognition, control or security.
