Choosing What To Wear When Attending A Medieval Wedding

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Rose Smith You’ve been invited to attend a medieval wedding and would like to dress up in a period costume, but you’re at a loss of what to choose. Before you run out and purchase anything, you should first find out if the wedding is going to be a strictly peasant style medieval wedding or is the couple focusing on a wedding that is more suited to high nobles, lords and kings. Showing up in peasant garb when everyone else is in rich-looking outfits would certainly be awkward. A lot of couples will put together a wedding combining the two social classes. They may have a simple wedding ceremony outside in nature (as the villagers and local farmers would do) and then move on to a medieval feast in a hall decorated to look like a banquet held in a castle. In this case, you could wear a costume that falls somewhat between the two classes, perhaps selecting the attire appropriate for well-to-do merchants, lesser nobles, royal knights, or a lady-in-waiting. On the other hand, the couple may elect to have an elaborate church wedding and then have their reception at some outdoor venue, such as a park or local gardens. If such is the case, you need to keep in mind that royalty did not “party in the park” when it came to such an important celebration. Dressing down would be more appropriate choosing attire more fitting to the lower classes such as a serving wench, a lesser knight, a monk and a villager. Just like today’s modern world, clothing styles changed rapidly with each generation. Be that as it may, there are still some common elements through most of the styles. Men and women often had certain items of clothing that were worn by both genders. The fabric used for medieval clothing was heavier than it is today. If you plan on sewing your own costumes, using upholstery fabrics would be best. Keep in mind that pastel colors were nonexistent at this time. The colors should be vibrant, rich and deep. Choose fabrics that contain deep blues, emerald or forest green, deep reds and burgundies, ocher, bright yellows and chocolate browns. The kirtle (undergarment) can be of a lighter weight material if you wish (if it is going to be entirely covered), but your cotehardie (the main outer garment) should be rich looking. Choose a suitable fabric for this such as velvet, brocade or damask. These garments were worn by both men and woman, with the man’s being shorter in length. Take care in choosing the fabric pattern. Medieval clothing did not contain stripes, polka dots or small patterns. The occasional outfit may have had large diamond shapes, but this was rare. By the fourteenth century buttons began to make an appearance and were created using small balls of cloth which were then stuffed with wool. Before buttons were invented, people used leather laces, ribbons and other such ties to secure clothing. Peasants, villagers and other workers didn’t have the money or access to the fine, rich materials that the nobles wore. Instead, their clothing consisted of rough wool and linen garments. If you elect to wear peasant garb, choose attire made from linen, cotton or other such materials so you will remain comfortable. It is usually more feasible and affordable to rent a medieval costume. However, the downside is that unless you live in a large city that has a variety of local costume rental shops or a professional theatre from which you may be able to buy or rent your attire, your costume selection may be limited. Buying a medieval costume online or sewing your own would probably be a better choice. (c) 2007, Rose Smith. Carpet Cleaning How To’s Tips And Tricks

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Glen Stevens Get Rid Of Dirt A bad smelling carpet can be the result of cooking odors, pet odors but it can also come from normal every day dirt and grime. If you do not clean your carpets on a regular basis you will need to use a stronger chemical product because the dirt will have ground itself deeper into the carpet and it becomes more difficult to lift. Have visitors remove their shoes so that they aren’t dragging that loose dirt across the carpets. Dirt is like thousands of little blades that cut carpet fibers. The process of ‘carpet steam cleaning’ uses a simple scientific phenomenon for ‘deep cleaning’ the toughest dirt by drawing dirt to the surface and wiping it off before it has a chance to stain. Once the solvent has been sprayed, and a brush has been used to reach all parts of the carpeted surface, the solvent attracts dirt, which dissolves in the solvent so that when the carpet is vacuumed dirt that has dissolved is removed. If there is any solid dirt in the carpet, such as dry residues caused by spilt liquids after they dry, it should be manually removed from the carpet surface. For general cleaning, select a product based on the kind of dirt to be cleaned. Start-up cost is minimal and cleaning equipments required are just the basic vacuum cleaner to suck up the dirt off the carpet that has to be cleaned, an ordinary or home-use carpet shampooer, including a locally-manufactured carpet shampoo. The best plan is a regular program of daily vacuuming, weekly dry absorbent powder cleaner, and a fairly frequent heavy-duty professional carpet cleaning to remove the deepest dirt and residue. How To’s In trying to evaluate the best carpet cleaning methods, remember that one method may work better than others, depending on the type or kind of carpet being cleaned. There are four primary cleaning methods: absorbent compound method; bonnet cleaning method; hot water extraction method; and dry foam cleaning method. This method is sometimes called the “dry cleaning method” as almost no water is used. Lets break it down as to which method does what. This method works much better than just shampooing the carpet. The choice of which method to choose for cleaning your home’s carpet will depend on several factors, the most important of which is what materials your carpet is made out of. Choose a method which is compatible with the fiber and underlay of the carpet. com, has perfected this method of cleaning and several franchises are locate throughout the company to help make their dry carpet cleaning equipment available for cleaning your carpets. This is the preferred method of professional carpet cleaners. In this method, cleaning chemicals are washed out of the carpet using soft hot water. The Hoover F7427-900 SteamVac Dual V Carpet Extractor is available at around $300 and uses a 12 amp motor with six rotating cleaning brushes and utilizes a heated cleaning method to help with deep cleaning. This is a favored method, as you do not have to wait for the carpet to dry. The absolute best way to clean your automotive carpet is by a hot water extraction method that uses solution based cleanser, dubbed ’steam cleaning’. Despite this few people know the proper protocols for cleaning carpets, in terms of frequency, method of cleaning and much more. Stain Removal Tricks Check out the tips for cleaning carpet stains below. 2) The correct way to clean carpet stains is to first collect as much of the offending spill as possible, then blot inward (blotting outward can make the stain bigger). For carpets with tough stains and dirt, steam cleaning does the best job. You can sometimes remove red wine stains if you catch them quickly enough. Similar to using a club soda on stains in clothing, these carbonating cleaners are used sparingly to break down the dirt and stains in a carpet and are then extracted to be virtually dry immediately after cleaning. For example if you add 3 teaspoons of clear dishwashing liquid, 1/4 cup of ammonia, and 1/4 cup of vinegar to a few gallons of water, you should be able to remove most stains from your carpets. These types of carpet cleaning services are good for quick fixes but the stains tend to come back after the detergents effects expire. No home would be complete with out some type of vacuum or sweeper and for those tough stains you will find people using the ever popular carpet steam cleaners. You just have to remember a few simple things: know your stain, know the stains age, and how big the stain is. Chemical carpet cleaning is now preferred by many people who want those pesky stains removed. You can use chemical carpet cleaning on certain stains that wont come up with conventional methods. The almost daily stains that my daughter is responsible for have convinced us that this was the right decision. You can also use a mixture of water and vinegar to help you remove stains out. Sacred Love - Compassion is Understanding and Understanding is Wisdom

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Christopher Walker Each day count your blessings to be alive and able to love. Although emotion may suggest that life is not always fair, never allow the pains, hurdles, and disappointments of the moment to overwhelm your loving attitude and plans for yourself and your beloved. What you dont appreciate, depreciates. You can never win when you wear the resentful mask of self-pity, and the bitter taste of accusation. They will certainly frighten away any opportunity for love. Never again hold a critical thought for yourself or your beloved. There is a better way. Understanding your lover, frees you to build more love with them. Trying to change them, destroys it. Sometimes our expectations are false, and that makes it impossible to be happy. If our expectations are real, then usually we find that people behave according to certain patterns, and those patterns belong to their constitution. Many quarrels occur between lovers because we fail to understand each others differences. Tolerance is important in this. What makes tolerance all the more easy is the skill of predicting exactly how a certain type of person will act and react. What is fascinating is that we fall in love with what is unique about a person, and then spend the rest of the time in relationship trying to change them to be someone else. Its because what makes them unique is also what causes all their problems. The ancients knew that to define a person by what they think, was to play into the hands of the human Ego, so they focused their understanding of human character on the different constitution of each body type. The result is Yoga and its sister science of health, Ayurveda. D came to me about his relationship. I have done everything she asked, I gave up golf, I look after the kids, I give her back rubs, I dont watch footy, I am now a vegetarian, I listen to her spiritual music. Everything she asked, I did. I even closed my office early every day to pick up our daughter from school so my wife could work late in her own business. I did everything, and last week she left me because my income is lousy. She told me that she couldnt hope to meet a more giving man, but she needed more. I asked D a question based on the fifth law of nature, What do you think she was attracted to when you first met her, why did she marry you in the first place? D replied, She wanted children, I wanted children. She wanted to build wealth, I wanted to build wealth. She wanted me to succeed in my clinic, I wanted her to succeed in her clinic. I guess you could say we had dreams to share and thats what we loved about each other, we shared dreams and wanted to help each other fulfill them. Then I asked So why did she leave? D replied, Well my dreams didnt happen, my business was struggling all the time, but that had a lot to do with the fact that she needed help and I gave up 3 hours a day in my clinic to help her. So what you are saying, D, is that she lost faith in your dreams D replied Yes, I guess so. But her success in her business was because I gave up on some of mine. Isnt that what relationships are about, give and take? I dont know D, but why did she leave? I told you, because she lost faith in my dreams. I did everything to please her, and still she wasnt happy. I returned to the laws of Nature. D. theres a law, and it is universal, It says Nobody can do to you more than you do to yourself. So if your wife lost heart toward your dream, then that can only tell me that you did too.D replied Yes, but I wanted the relationship to work. I shared more Did you know that when one person loses their dream, their vision for the future, they always turn their focus in on the relationship and begin to make the relationship the purpose of their life? Can you imagine a tree, whose purpose is to grow skyward, but it changes its mind and starts making its purpose helping another tree to grow. What do you think would happen? D replied I know from what you told me before, the Nature destroys anything that does not fulfill its purpose. So why would nature destroy your relationship? D had tears in his eyes To get me back on purpose? I asked And what is that? D replied I dont know. I had a dream when we met, but really all I wanted was a family. I think my dream was BS, all I wanted was a home and a baby and a wife. I asked And was that what she thought when she agreed to marry you? He replied No, she wanted a man just like her Dad, a wealthy successful immigrant who worked night and day to make a fortune. She wanted an ambitious man and I think I became that so she would love me and marry me. Now I think about it, I never really wanted all that stuff, but I went to the seminars she invited me to, and wrote these purpose statements about changing the world. All I really wanted, and ever dreamed about, was a simple home, a beautiful wife, a baby and an income from my teaching that could keep us comfortable. All the rest, I did for her. I said to him So really, where you ended up is truth, and what she wanted was something different. And out of love for her, you tried to change, but who you are is who you are, right? So now we need to work out how you can have your dream, let her go to find hers, without feeling like something is missing, right? D replied, I love my baby girl and my ex and I have agreed that I can look after her during the weeks while she works. You are right Chris, I do have what I want and if I value that, my dreams have all come true. Loving your partner for who they are - rather than for who they could be. P came to me so frustrated. He said, I am in this relationship with a beautiful woman, and I love her dearly. But, she has an ex-husband who wont let go, a father who abuses her, a mother who keeps dropping in to stay, friends who are and I asked, So what is it that you love about her? He replied, I love everything about her, if only she could clear away all this stuff, wed be so happy. I responded But all this stuff is who she is. He got angry No its not, its other people interfering. No, I suggested, She is no victim, these are her choices and thats who she is. P replied, But she could be so much more. Maybe, I said, But that is not who she is. She is who she is and you have no right to change that. Maybe you need to learn to love that in her, rather than project your ideals and expectations onto her. Maybe its you who need to grow your love to include those things, and you cant. P replied Its too late, I already hurt her. I said in closing, Its never too late to grow. Maybe the relationship is over, but you can still learn and grow, and therefore be thankful for her and her ex etc This is the second law of nature maximum growth occurs at the border of chaos and order. Realistic expectations The five elements are Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. We all have these five elements within us and the proportions of each one, vary from person to person. Those proportions never change, from the moment of birth to death. No matter how much, or how little we eat or exercise, read or dont read, the proportions never change. This is called you Elemental Constitution. I will summarise these body types here for you, but in Innerwealth Book 4, this is explained in great detail and includes a self analysis for you to determine your Element. Earth People Stocky Water People Round and fleshy Fire people Medium muscular Air People Short thin Ether Tall thin EARTH Do you know me? I am Earth. I love the home we build and the safety. I love the security and the trust we share. I am strong yet, fragile. Controlling, you might think, but I act to make your world safe, and in doing so, believe my eyes to be wisest. I wrap my arms around you because I love you, but really I want your tenderness, your fun and lightness. It is this that makes all my heaviness vanish and my lights come alive. I am the earth, reality is my level. I hold fast to all that is tangible and I am lost like a child in all that is not. I am bricks and mortar, I am money in the hand. I am security and trust. I know little of the vague ideals of romantic notions of God, but find peace in your arms. I need you and love you in my own special way. WATER Do you know me? I am Water. I love the embraces, the swooning of your touch. If there were no tomorrow it would not matter to me. Your arms are the death and birth of my life. You take me from my ever present worry about the world and its children. To me, Love is easy to give, I give love as care, I nurture and smile. I am the infinite healer who can give and give. No tiredness. But your Love replenishes me, you sexualise me and bring these treasures that are mine into a whole new level. I can worship no God to whom I cannot speak. I need to know that God has compassion and can help me make the world more caring. I believe in the possibility of goodness and therefore I see it in you. I need you and love you in my own special way. FIRE Do you know me? I am Fire. I love to be the best, win every test. I am insatiable yet not inexhaustible. I a fired on moment and dead the next. My Love is expressed in my action. I cannot trust the mind, or poetry of your expression. I need to feel and touch to know. More devotion you will never know, more rejection you will also know in one day summit to ocean floor. It never stops, my love demands no rest until I break. I am change. I am the critic who sees the half empty cup yet may choose to be silent in order to woo you. I am temptation and lust, unsustainable without your stroking, and those of others through work or play. I am the tiger, in a cage, I am dead. I cannot hand my power to an infinite source, I need to know how it works. Give me the Laws of Creation, but not a creator of judgmental mind. Your love is my God, your judgments my religion, I try to stop them, but you should never stop being the magnificent truth of you. I need you and love you in my own special way. AIR Do you know me? I am Air. I love the universe, it is thought, it is my domain. I am the prince and the princess of thought. I am creative, inventive and insatiable. Nothing can quench my hunger for you. Only my mind can confuse my love. I am hot and alive and I thrive on your beauty and our dance. I can dance forever, in my heart, but my body is frail and can leave me needing your arms to hold me. I need your steadiness to embrace me, I need your warm and loving solidness. No fire will nurture me, only excite me, your moisture your earth make my universe possible. I can fly, anywhere I choose in my mind, my Love for you is eternal, if only my body would survive. Hold me close but never lock my wings. My mind would die if it couldnt invent. My world is your world, I easily follow, and suffer the fall. This child - inside us all, this is me. I need you and love you in my own special way. ETHER Do you know me? I am Ether. I love myself, and through it I love God. I come from other worlds beyond yours and so my love for you is measured in me. I do not understand you, yet I think I do. I do not see how wonderful I am because I think I can be like you. I am born in my last incarnation. I am tested in living on this earth by having to go back and relearn my humanity. I tried to hand you my power, for support, it looks normal, everyone does. But I couldnt breathe. You reach out for me and I am here, yet, I cannot feed you in return. I do not have that in me. I am the King or Queen, alone yet surrounded. If I could float in my paradise I would and yet, my responsibility to you, is like the anchor to a kite, tied through my love to your hand. If you release me, I am afraid I will never find home. If you hold on, in the light winds of the day, I may fall from my sky and never, ever fly again. My love is unfathomable in its magnificence, it is however, tortured. You will never know what magnitude of Love is possible with me, your earthly life distracts you. And so, I turn to the Spirits for help. My angels and my Gods. Hold me, do not let my anchor loose, I will fight you like a viper, demanding my freedom, but in truth, if you do let go, my husband or wife, I might never know earth again. I might birth a child or sire one, it is not for me, I do it to hold onto you. Never let go. I need you and love you in my own special way. Conclusion We are all these things. Dancing within us are all these elements. Some have stronger presence in us than others. This is our Core Element. But no person is just one. Such is impossible in this entire universe of stars. In the ebb and flow of life, we swing between these elements with apparently no reason, but there is order in that chaos, a predicable and completely understandable pattern of demand. Which one of our elements we are living today is a condition of life and I wish to share it. Chris Walker is a world leading change agent, an environmentalist and author of more than 20 books. The Groom Wears What? It’s Summer in the South!

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

By Irene Conlan Lets talk about what the groom wears when the temperature is sizzling and you have an outdoor wedding. Men, do I have your attention? Brides, pay attention, too. Traditionally (dont you sometimes resent that word?) the groom appears in a tuxedo with a cummerbund and perhaps a bow tie and vest that matches the brides colors or the theme of the wedding. And, yes, it is elegant. A man who lives in Levis or in shorts and T shirts is completely transformed in appearance when he puts on a tux and people are wandering around looking for the groom because they dont recognize him. Even if youre used to seeing him in suits, theres something exceptional about the way he looks in a tuxedo. We have to admit that a man in a tux looks awesome. But lets get real. Lets talk about weddings held outside in the summer on the Southwest dessert or anywhere in the south where the humidity races with the temperature to determine which can go the highest. Putting him and his attendants in a tuxedo is like putting them in a sauna, turning up the heat and leaving them there to cook. Of course everyone is uncomfortably hot. The bride in those yards and yards of fabric at least can go strapless as can the bridesmaids. But the groom and groomsmen have a long sleeved shirt, a vest, a cummerbund and a jacket that could keep them warm in Alaska. The air flow is completely cut off at the neck because hes strangled with a necktie that is uncomfortable even in winter. So what can you do about it? Show me the rule written in stone that says the groom has to wear a jacket. There are some wonderful shirts that can be worn without a jacket and still look quite elegant. Or you can have shirts made to fit the theme of your wedding. A white tuxedo shirt with wonderful studs and cufflinks and a bow tie and perhaps suspenders can be quite elegant and make a statement that weddings are as much about setting your own style and being comfortable as about trying to out-dress those whose ceremony is held in the air conditioned comfort of a church. Another idea is to let the groom and his attendants wear a vest that matches the bridesmaids color and go without the jacket or wear the tuxedo shirt and black vest with a tie that matches the color or the brides attendants. If you want to get creative, you can choose a themed wedding that allows everyone to be comfortable. A Hawaiian theme, for example, allows the bride to choose something beautiful and elegant and the rest of the wedding party to come in loose fitting, Hawaiian type shirts and dresses. The guests can also come dressed Hawaiian if they wish. I once officiated at a wedding in a muumuu, at the brides request. The wedding was on the 4th of July, the temperature was still 112 degrees at 6 p.m. and the wedding was wonderful. Everyone was comfortable and stayed to party long after the ceremony was over. The bride wore a beautiful, cool long dress as did her attendants. The groom wore an elegant Hawaiian wedding shirt and the groomsmen were in flowered matching Hawaiian shirts. They had the traditional wedding leis flown in from Hawaii and lei for each of the guests. It was a memorable wedding. No one missed the tuxedos. Closing The Gap On A Long Distance Relationship

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Ron Zvagelsky Your long distance relationship ends and suddenly you find yourself insecure about your relationship. It is easy to separate your feelings for the person when they are emailing you to tell you they love and miss you, but when you have to face the person daily you also have to face the day-to-day dating issues that come up. Rapidly you find yourself discussing where to eat, what to do, what bills to pay, and so on, when before the hardest decision was what time to call. At first you will go through a honeymoon phase that every long distance relationship goes through when you finally get together. Everything will seem so wonderful now that you are able to see each other whenever you want. It ends quickly however, and you may find that you enjoy the solitude that you once had while online dating. You may also realize that you dont want to see the person everyday or even a couple of times during the week. Some people fall in love with long distance dating because you still maintain your independence without the compromise that must happen when you find yourself dating someone. You need to first accept the fact that you cant live in fantasy land anymore. Before the two of you come together, discuss what needs to be done to ensure that you can live near each other and still keep the spark that you feel when away from each other. You need to take this time to discuss your general habits, your financial situation, your living situation, what you expect out of the relationship, and how slowly you will move after a long distance relationship. In some ways it is like starting all over again with someone new. You need to learn their lifestyle and how they go about their day. Things like what time they wake up in the morning can suddenly seem crucial. If you take the time to talk about every little detail that didnt seem important before you can make your long distance relationship into a long and happy short distance relationship. Natural Pest Control On The Rise, But Does It Work?

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By John Bennett The growing concerns over health and environmental issues continue to drive awareness and usage of alternative methods for pesticide-free pest control. These methods range from home-made remedies to professional pesticide alternatives that are currently being adopted by several national pest control providers. Today there are only a few pockets of smaller specialized natural pest control operators around the country, but the demand from consumers are creating a noticeable growth pattern in this untapped market as well. Many cities, state and federal government entities including schools around the country are leading the way in adopting Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs to reduce or even eliminate the use of pesticides all together. Why the shift to alternative methods? We are beginning to see well documented medical and scientific studies on the negative effects of pesticides being used today. For example, the U.S. Geological Survey recently released Pesticides in the Nations Streams and Ground Water, in March 2006. This study was a 10 year survey from 1992 to 2001 which reveals concerning residual effects of pesticide use. Every year, nearly one billion pounds of pesticides, many of which are linked to cancer, birth defects, neurological disorders, and environmental impacts, are used in the U.S, much of it ending up in our nations waterways. National Pesticide-Free Resources & InformationMany organizations and grassroots movements continue to educate communities and citizens through the tireless efforts of concerned individuals. These efforts are no doubt creating an impact on consumer awareness and product purchasing requirements. Information on IPM is available at sites such as the EPA at http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/ipm and the IPM Institute at http://www.ipminstitute.org/. A very popular and informational grassroots organization called Beyond Pesticides at http://www.beyondpesticides.org is also informative on new legislation, pesticide news, and pesticide reduction information. A Balanced View of Effective Pest ControlThe safe control of unwanted insects and weeds must be pursued with a balanced and global view of efficacy, cost, consequential effects on human health and the environment. Until today, there has been the perception that safer alternatives cost more or dont even work at all. Thus, giving rise to the continued use of more toxic forms of pest control. If we dont see the negative effects immediately, it easily becomes out of sight and out of mind. Costs for pesticide free alternatives are very comparable to traditional pesticides. The difference in cost per square foot is nominal or even irrelevant when compared to the health benefits of the building occupants. Does Natural Pest Control Work?So the biggest question I receive from both residential users and professional applicators is: Does it work? In short, YES! As with any pest control product, there are solutions that maximize the control of specific types of pests whether you have ants, roaches, scorpions, termites, mosquitoes, ticks, weeds, or whatever. Choosing the right products however, is often difficult. So we always recommend those products that meet the performance requirements of organic farmers or professional applicators since they also have a significant financial interest in their effectiveness. Having distinctions from OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) and Food Tolerance Exemptions also helps filter through the marketing hype while adding another layer of product safety assurance. If you are fortunate to have a friend or acquaintance that uses natural pest control or IPM methods, getting a personal endorsement is invaluable to help you save time and money. Lastly, always read the label. Youll find a lot more information than you think. Dont overlook the many proven alternatives that will keep your building free of hazardous pesticides and unwanted pests. If you use a professional pest control service, inquire about pesticide free alternatives. If you are doing it yourself and cant find what you are looking for on your local store shelf, ask the store owner to stock them. Effective Networking Skills: The Art Of Taking Your Job Search To A Whole New Level

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By David Richter Your network consists of family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and former employers. It also consists of your dentist, your barber or hair stylist, your accountant and your local grocery store manager. Networking is not only who you know, but who knows you. You may know a lot of people, but how well do they know you especially in terms of your skills, talents, creativity and potential? How familiar are these people with your value proposition — your unique gifts? It is your value proposition that differentiates you from the crowd; it is what stands out in the minds of those with whom you are networking. Your value proposition is the cornerstone for all self-introductory communication. It sets the tone. Its how you make your mark. It is how you describe yourself during any networking scenario. The best way to network is to communicate your qualities to the people you know, so they in turn will know you better. Practice doing this in as concise and clear a way as possible. When you communicate your value proposition in a lasered way, you will be extremely effective. Networking is never about asking someone for a job. Its about letting people in, and asking questions such as Who do you know? and Who else should I be talking to? This process can truly mushroom, especially if you dont wait until you are out of work before making contact with people. The results can be quite amazing. Networking is also about finding out as much as you can about the people with whom you are networking. This serves many purposes. Remembering things about a person the next time you see them makes them feel significant. They will want to do more for you. Secondly, you can begin to connect the dots between their background and your own career objectives. Thirdly, you are building a bridge of trust; your encounter will be viewed as genuine and mutually beneficial, rather than as a manipulative gesture designed just for your gain. An important part of networking is continuance. Youre building a relationship. There needs to be planned follow-up activity and communication. The best way to accomplish this is by asking for their business card and summarizing the action steps you plan to take based on your dialog. Include a follow-up phone call as part of your summary. Once your brief meeting has concluded, send a thank-you note to the person, reiterating your appreciation for their willingness to meet with you, and any planned steps you will be taking. Networking supports your entire job search effort. As an extremely powerful strategy which accounts for roughly 80% of all job fills, it allows you to get in doors that would otherwise be impossible to enter. You can network your way into potential opportunities that can turn into the right job created just for you. Its a great way to tap the hidden job market! Networking is about creating relationships which, in turn, creates opportunities. It is about connecting, which builds a network of support that can last a lifetime. Only three ingredients are required: You will need just a bit of courage to open up a dialog with someone you already know, or someone who was referred to you. You need to be aware of your potential and worth. The final ingredient is caring caring enough about the other person to truly be interested in them and to build a connection, to start a relationship. The results will speak for themselves. Ideas for Using Various Kinds of Paper For Scrapbooking and Card Making

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

By Lisa Robbins Scrapbooking Paper There are many types of paper to use in your scrapbooking and craft projects including vellum, cardstock, labels, and transparencies. Here is a quick bit about understanding these types of paper and ideas of how to use them. When you are buying paper, remember to make sure it is acid and lignin free to protect your pictures against deterioration. Vellum Scrapbooking Paper Vellum paper is translucent, meaning light can pass through it, although things cannot be seen clearly through vellum paper. Vellum paper is categorized by weight. The samller ther number, the light the weight of the paper, and subsequently, the more transparent, or see-through, the paper is. For example 17# is more transparent than 29#. There are many weights and colors of vellum to experiment with. You can print on vellum using any laser printer. When using an inkjet printer change your settings to economy, draft, or speed depending on yout printer so the least amount of ink possible with be used. This will decrease your chances of smearing the ink. Let the ink dry completly before handling the vellum paper. If you have only a small piece of vellum to print on, print your message on a regular piece of paper first. Then temporarily tape the vellum over the message on your test paper and run it through the printer again. To mount your vellum paper to your scrapbooking page, lay your piece of vellum paper up-side-down of newspaper, and lightly spray photo mounting spray on the back. The vellum paper will them mount easily to your scrapbook. Other methods include using clear photo corners, and punching holes in the vellum and using a ribbon or eyelet to attach the vellum to your page. For scrapbooking, vellum is great for printing titles, and adding embellishments. One simple idea is to stamp or paint a design on vellum paper that is trimmed with a thin metal frame. You can attach the vellum embellishment to the page with a ribbon. This is a good idea for pages where an anitque look is desired. Vellum Invitations - Great for weddings or other formal events Print the information for the event on vellum paper. Select a piece of heavy cardstock to back your vellum paper. Cut the cardstock to be about half an inch bigger than your vellum paper in both directions. Place the vellum on top of the card stock so there is a quarter of an inch of cardstock on each side as a border. Punch two holes in the top of the vellum paper and cardstock that are about an inch or an inch and a half apart. And use a matching ribbon to tie the papers together. Hint: To keep the ribbon from comming untied use a dab of clear-drying glue. Another option is to decorate the vellum and attach it over the printed invitation. The velum can be embossed or you can add a a dash of glitter to make it sparkle. Embossing Your Paper - Embossing is a way to really enhance your pages. Vellum looks great embossed, but you can experiment on other types of paper as well. Here is how it is done. Stamp or print onto your paper and sprinkle embossing powder on the design while it is still wet. Shake of the excess powder from the paper. Use you embossing heater or other heating tool to heat the embossing powder. Cardstock Carstock is usually thicker than normal paper, and therefore is good to use as a base for your scrapbooking pages especially if you like to add heavy embellishments. It is also good for matting pictures onto. I like to buy smaller pieces of cardtock to mat my pictures on. That way I don’t have to worry about cutting perfectly straight lines. There are many types of cardstock. Two popular types of cardstock are smooth card stock and linen card stock. Both are excellent choices for scrapbooking. Linen card stock is semi-rough and has the look of linen cloth. It is good for adding more texture to your scrapbook pages if you think they are too dull. There are many grades of cardstock. Remember that the higher the count, the thicker the paper is. Labels Before I started scrapbooking I thought that labels were just for business uses like addressing letter and labeling files. I have come to find that they are actually an inexpensive way to make neat stickers. If you have a good printer, you can find pictures you like on the internet and print them onto your label paper. Then just peel them off or cut them into the desired shape and stick them onto your scrapbooking page. If you want to add dimension to your page, mount your sticker onto thick cardstock and use double-sided tape to attach it to your scrapbook. Transparencies A transparency is a clear piece of paper. It is competely see-through like glass. You can buy transparencies at office supply stores, and some craft stores. You have likely only seen transparencies used with overhead projectors. But here are some other ways to use them for scrapbooking. Use your imagination, the possibilities are endless. Transparency Covers Stamp letters on a piece of paper. Cut them out, and glue them right side up onto a transparency. You can also use shapes of any kind instead of letters. Paint over the transparency on the same side you glued the letters. You can paint using a splattering technique, streaks, or any other way you can think of. Acrylic paint works great. Once the paint is dry, remove the letters for a cool effect. This technique is great for page titles. Optional: Attach the transparency using spray adhesive. Transparency Tile Accents Stamp an image on a transparency with solvent ink. Trim the transparency around the image. You can also cut the image into equal size squares to create a mosaic look. Completely cover the image with clear dimensional adhesive until it can’t hold any more. Let the adhesive dry for a few hours. When the image is competely dry, apply clear-drying adhesive to the back and attach it to your page. Transparency Accents Cut the desired shape of your accent out of a piece of transparency paper. Cover the accent with crystl laquer until it can’t hold any more. Cover the accent with crystl laquer until it can’t hold any more. When the crystal lacquer is dry, peel the transparency off of the back of the accent. Lisa Robbins is a businesswoman and an enthusiast for sports, family, and crafts.
