Birthday Invitation to Going Home Time - Tips For A Successful ‘Child’s Birthday Party’

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Stephen Turner The Birthday Invitation The birthday invitation does not just give vital information about when and where, it sets your theme (a crucial factor in you planning) so make sure you give thought to the birthday invitation. It helps if you view the birthday invitation as setting up the first party activity by introducing some anticipation and excitement for the theme. Whether your theme be a treasure hunt, a dinosaur themed party, or a super heroes fancy dress party, don’t miss out on the opportunity to set things up properly in the birthday invitation. Otherwise, you’ll have to do it when all the guests have arrived which is a lot trickier than it sounds. How many children? As with all parties, you’ll need some idea of how many guests will be attending. You may hear talk of a rule of thumb that says that you should aim for as many guests as the age of your child, but I certainly remember there being more than six people at my sixth birthday party! All I can really say is on this point is that you should keep numbers manageable. It would be a good idea to enlist the help of another parent, if they are prepared to give it, and in this way you may be able to make the event one for adults too. However, you will need to keep the event children centred and there are many ways you can do this, which I discuss below. How long will the party be? Two hours is long enough for a child’s party so plan for this time. Make sure that the birthday invitation has the start and end time on it. Your theme and your activities Having set up your theme in the birthday invitation, stick to it during the party and adapt all your activities to fit the theme. Look to your child’s interests for themes that work. Your child’s favourite animal or cartoon character will work well. Have pictures and items connected with the theme animal or character around the house and garden, and then cover tables with coverings which match the colours of your theme character or animal. For example, if the theme is Superman, then cover tables with red and blue cloth to match Superman’s outfit. Children need changes of focus, so plan for a number of fifteen minute activities and keep things moving until it is time for cake and ice cream. You should adapt your activities to fit the theme, although the best activities remain the traditional old favourites. A treasure hunt becomes a Superman treasure hunt for items connected with Superman, and prizes connected with Superman. Pin the tail on the donkey is adapted into pin the cape on Superman and musical chairs become Superman musical chairs with music from the movie. You get the idea. If you are short of a few activities, the internet is a great resource for ideas. When it is time for cake an ice cream, make sure that the cake and ice cream fit the theme. You can bake a cake yourself, or your local cake shop will be able to help, but make sure that you give them enough notice. It would be a good idea to show them the birthday invitation so that they are completely aware of the theme. They may even be able to suggest ideas for the meal time! Remember to continue with your theme at the meal time by doing things like make your own Superman sundae with red and blue coloured sweets and decoration. You can even buy themed party packages, which have everything from the birthday invitations to the activities and games all included. Hiring a professional This is where the biggest cost element will come in, but a well chosen guest can really make the party. Depending on your theme, you could hire Superman, a fairy princess, or a clown. However, if you are strapped for cash then do not worry, because children can do without expensive attractions as long as you keep them entertained. Will the superman outfit fit you? Just imagine how your kid and his or her friends will feel when they find out that, yes, you are Superman! If you enter into the spirit of things, then no one will miss the professional! Managing Cravings with EFT

Friday, September 14th, 2007

By Kathryn Martyn, M.NLP There are several ways to manage cravings. You can: Attempt to stop eating the food you crave entirely (out of sight out of mind). Modify your eating habits around a particular food, i.e. cut back on the quantity or how often you indulge. Use EFT to end the attachment you have to this particular food. 1. Stop Eating the Food you Crave Eliminating the offending food entirely is rarely successful. We can only limit ourselves for so long before we go crazy, eating everything in sight to make up for the deprivation. This also introduces deprivation and control issues, which many have trouble with leftover from childhood. Would it be better to learn to enjoy your favorites without losing control around them? 2. Modify your Eating Habits Modifying your behavior can be successful, but it can also be difficult because even though we want to change, it seems that despite our best efforts, we still find ourselves craving the same things, day after day. It is the “how” that stops us. How can we change a behavior that is a habitual response? How can we stop doing what we don’t want to do? There are literally thousands of diet and weight loss books and most offer nothing more useful than the “eat less, exercise more” advice. If it were simply a matter of doing what we know we should do, there would be no obesity epidemic, but it’s not that simple. We need to know HOW. 3. Use EFT to end the Attachment to a Particular Food EFT is often helpful to diminish or demolish the cravings. It can be your HOW. How to change habits that you want to be rid of, how to create new, better habits, that support what you want, instead of what you don’t. EFT is simple to learn, and effective. If you don’t yet know how to do EFT, read this brief explanation, then download and print the worksheets, instructions and reminders all in one convenient PDF packet. 4. Stop Talking Yourself Into It You’ve said you are going to stop nighttime snacking, and then the voices start, “I’ve been good all day, I deserve a treat, just one won’t hurt…” You’re basically talking yourself into it, and then you’re off and running to the kitchen. Most of us find that once we say yes to that voice, there’s no holding ourselves back. As soon as you realize you are doing the “talk myself into it” routine, start using EFT immediately. Catching yourself in the act is difficult at first, but if you keep an open mind, you will start to notice. No matter where you are or what you are doing, you can instantly perform an EFT procedure on yourself, and get quick results. You don’t need to wait until later, until the atmosphere is just right, or until you are alone or somewhere you can relax. You can do it while driving, you can do it in a crowd standing on the corner. Examples of EFT for Ending Cravings The first round you might notice the craving is somewhat reduced (or it could disappear entirely), but it will likely be lessened. Once you have done one round, re-rate your desire for the food, and if it is still high (more than a six), do another round of EFT right then: Set-up: “Even though I still want to eat _________, I’m fine just the way I am.” Reminder: “Still want to eat _________.” While I’m doing the EFT round, I might find myself thinking things such as, “It’s not that I want to eat them all, it’s just that once I start I can’t stop.” So, for the next round I’ll use that statement: Set-up: “Even though I can’t stop eating cookies once I get started, I deeply and completely accept myself anyway.” Say the “even though” part with gusto, you really mean it! You are okay, just the way you are. Reminder: “Can’t stop” This round might lead to, “That’s not true, I can decide how much I want, I just don’t want to limit myself,” so the next round might be: Set-up: “Even though I hate to limit myself, I deeply and completely…” or “Even though I don’t want to limit myself,” or whatever words fit your situation. Reminder: “No limits” Make this process yours and let your personal thoughts guide you. Doing this will help you unearth core issues and beliefs you may not have realized were there. More often than not what happens with these simple and effective techniques is you will stop using them. Not because they don’t work, but because they do. You will stop because you aren’t ready to give up your eating habits - you like the food, you enjoy the taste, the pleasure you gain from the eating is greater than the pleasure you anticipate by making a change in your habits. It’s as if you say to yourself, “Screw it, I don’t care. I want it now, and I’m going to have it.” Much like a small child, you are simply feeding your instant desire, and that’s okay too. Be gentle with yourself. Realize you will do this on occasion, and accept it. It doesn’t make you a failure, it simply proves you are human. Accept yourself as you are. If you make a commitment to do the EFT exercises, even though you don’t want to, you will reach success. In my work reluctance to do something that will work explains why people continue to seek something new. They read new books, they try new diets (witness Atkins, now South Beach Diet), they ask each other (usually their overweight friends) what they are doing (why not ask someone without a weight problem instead?). The answer is they don’t really want to make a change for the better, they just want the easy fix. Give me a pill, a simple food plan, make it easy for me, and I’ll do it. I can keep on any plan for the short-term, lose some weight, then as I’m gaining it back I can just blame myself. It’s my fault for stopping the diet. It’s my fault, for not staying on the plan. This is not a healthy way to live. Take back your power. You decide what you will or won’t do every day. Stop giving that power to others - stop blaming yourself for not staying on someone else’s plan, and make your own plan. This is the single most important thing in anyone’s change process: Realizing what you want for your health, your body, your life, is more important than what you get by the instant gratification. Free Vitamins to Grow Hair

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

By Kent Pinkerton There are many hair vitamins available in the market today that promise to make hair grow thicker and healthier. Sadly, most of them are quite expensive and they need to be taken over a long period of time. What is more, you are not even sure if they really work. Don’t you wish you could get them for free just to find out if they really work? Actually, there are a couple of alternative ways to get them at discounted prices or even for free. Vitamins with money-back guarantees These hair vitamins, especially the ones that are sold online, usually have money-back guarantees. This means that when you are not satisfied by the product, you can send back the unfinished bottle to the manufacturer and they, in turn, will give you your money back. Though this would seem like you are getting the good end of the deal, you are not. If you end up liking the product and are satisfied with it, then there will be no reason for you to return it and you will not get your money back. And if you do decide to return it, you still have to pay for the cost of shipping and handling. So when you think about it, there is no such thing as free hair vitamin in this case. Be a test subjects for hair vitamins The only way for you to get hair regrowth vitamins for free is by submitting yourself as a test subject for either research or development of the product. Manufacturers will test their products on you and in turn, you will find out of for yourself if they really work. If they do work, then good for your hair. Human test subjects are very well-paid, and with good reason. Submitting your hair in the pursuit of hair care research and development products can be hazardous to your health. How to Remove Hard Water Stains

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

By Brenda H. Murphy If you happen to live in a location where there is a high level of lime, magnesium and calcium in your water supply, then you have what is referred to as hard water. And chances are that somewhere in your home, whether it is around a leaking tap, or in the tub where the water drips down the end, you have hard water stains. How you remove these stains, depends on where they are. Phosphoric acid is the base of most cleaners, and even average household bathroom cleaners will have about 6% of this in the content. That may not be enough for stubborn stains or build up, however. When you prefer not to use chemicals, you can first try soaking the area with white vinegar, and letting it set for half an hour. That should penetrate the residue enough that it can then be scrubbed or scraped off. If it doesn’t, you may need a cream cleaner if you have stains on acrylic surfaces, or a vitreous enamel cleaner for things like the toilet, sink or tub. If the build-up is on the metal surface of the tap or mountings, you can try scraping it with a razor blade after it has softened, but be careful of cutting yourself, and scratching the fixtures. Bleach can remove some stains, such as in the toilet, but should not be left there for long periods of time, as it can affect the shine of your enamel. Truly stubborn stains may need a commercial cleaner. However, if you have been trying other solutions first, be sure to rinse them away thoroughly, so there are no potentially harmful interactions between chemicals when you apply another cleaner. When Its Cold Outside - Its Chili

Monday, September 10th, 2007

By Donna Hager Actually, I love chili anytime of the year, but during cold weather it is especially good, or as the novelist Margaret Cousins said, “Chili is not so much food as it is a state of mind. Addictions to it are formed early in life and the victims never recover. On cold, blue days in October, I get this passionate yearning for a bowl of chili, and I nearly lose my mind.” There are probably thousands of different chili recipes and I enjoy making and eating a variety of chili recipes. For me, it is a great food adventure. And although I may have my personal favorites, such as my version of a traditional chili, I really don’t get too excited if someone else has his favorite that is much different than mine. Some people like it spicy and hot and some prefer it mildly spiced. Some cooks use ground beef while others insist that the beef should be chopped. There are chili recipes that use chicken, turkey, pork, venison or other rather exotic meats. Some chili recipes use beer or meat stocks as part or all of the cooking liquid. There are many vegetarian versions of chili as well. The use of vegetable stock and/or tomatoes eliminates the need for meat. What kinds of beans, if any, should be in a chili? Here, too, you’ll find a vast range of preferences. Pinto beans, red beans, kidney beans, black beans or white beans - there are recipes that use each or them or even a combination of several, such as the Three Bean Enchilada Recipe on the website. But you should also know that there were no beans in chili originally! What kind of chile peppers or chili seasoning should be used and how much? With this the great chili debate really heats up - so to speak. ( Chile refers to the pepper pod. Chili to the creation. ) And the great chili debate is not limited to what chili or chili recipe is best. Some people are so passionate about where the first bowl was made and who made it that they nearly come to blows. In America, chili is something many people love to cook and eat, and some love to argue about. My Texas friends will undoubtedly defend their chili as the best ( and maybe the only true chili) in the world. In his book, “Simple Cooking,” John Thorpe wrote, “It can only truly be Texas red if it walks the thin line just this side of indigestibility: Damning the mouth that eats it and defying the stomach to digest it, the ingredients are hardly willing to lie in the same pot together.” What is amazing to me, however, is that even among residents of Texas there is disagreement as to the single best chili recipe. That has helped keep “chili cookoffs” alive and well, not only in Texas, but in a number of areas throughout the country. I have never desired to be a chili judge. If their life isn’t in jeopardy, their digestive systems may be. When my husband once thought about accepting an invitation to judge such a contest I told him he’d sleep outside that night if he did. He declined the invitation to be a judge, thank goodness. Is there such a thing as “the original Texas chili?” The history of chili is very unclear about this. There is a recipe that is at least traceable to a cattle range cook, or perhaps it was from the combined offerings of several old cowboys straddled up to a Texas bar. Nobody will swear that this is the first true Texas chili recipe, but most say it seems pretty close. Notice …no beans. Chili con Carne Recipe An “Original” Chili RecipeCut up as much meat as you think you will need (any kind will do, but beef is probably best) in pieces about the size of a pecanPut it in a pot, along with some suet (fat) enough so as the meat won’t stick to the sides of the potCook it with about the same amount of wild onions, garlic, oregano, and chiles as you have got meatPut in some saltStir it from time to time and cook it until the meat is as tender as you think it’s going to get Some chili recipes today are rather “tame” or mild because that is the way some people like it. But the history of chili is pretty clear that there never was anything really mild about chili and there was a very good reason. Think about it. Even if chili did not originate in Texas, the cattle drives and range cooks certainly helped popularize it. On the trail, the cook used what meat he had available. If if wasn’t fresh-killed beef or buffalo or deer then it was likely jackrabbit or rattlesnake. The range cook certainly feared his own lynching if he tried to feed the cow hands freshly killed beef or buffalo without aging the meat. Out of necessity he had to attempt to disguise the meat’s flavor and for this he used what he had on hand: onions, garlic, salt and chile peppers. The range cook also knew that spices helped keep the meat from spoiling. Chili became the meal of the day. And the term “Chili con Carne” is Spanish for “peppers and meat.” (See, no beans.) Some food experts and historians say that San Antonio should be given credit for popularizing chili because it was there that women called “Chili Queens” occupied parts of the Military Plaza and sold their highly seasoned stews called “chili” from small carts. Although these ladies sold chili from carts for many years, it became very popular by 1880. In fact the plaza became known as “La Plaza del Chile con Carne.” And it was then that the “Queens” began to refine and add sophistication to the dish they were selling. They brought it somewhere near todays stage because each one was constantly striving to improve her chili recipe, simply to attract more customers than any of the competition. The desire to cook up the best bowl of chili in the world is at least that old. Apparently chili cookoffs were born. Here is an example of a Chili Queen’s recipe: (Again, no beans) Chili Queen’s Recipe Original San Antonio Chili Ingredients:2 pounds beef shoulder, cut into 1/2 inch cubes 1 pound pork shoulder, cut into 1/2 inch cubes 1/2 cup suet (fat from meat, 1/4 cup beef fat, 1/4 cup pork fat)3 medium-sized onions, chopped 6 garlic cloves, minced 1 quart water 4 ancho chiles 1 serrano chile 6 dried red chiles 1 tablespoon comino seeds, freshly ground (cumin)2 tablespoons Mexican oregano Salt to taste Instructions:Place lightly floured beef and pork cubes in the pork and beef fat in a heavy chili pot and cook quickly, stirring often.Add onions and garlic and cook until they are tender and limpAdd water to mixture and simmer slowly while preparing chilesRemove stems and seeds from chiles and chop very finelyGrind chiles in molcajete and add oregano with salt to mixtureSimmer another 2 hoursRemove fat pieces and skim off some fatNever cook frijoles with chiles and meatServe as separate dish. (Institute of Texan Cultures) So where was chili invented? Again the history of chili simply indicates there may not be an answer. We know that peppers and spices have existed since the beginning of time. Chile peppers show up in the ancient foods of China, India, Indonesia, Italy, the Caribbean, France, and the Arab states. The green chile pepper was brought to what is now New Mexico in 1598. And strangely enough, Canary Islanders who came to San Antonio as early as 1723 used local peppers, wild onions, garlic, and other spices to cook pungent meat dishes somewhat like the ones they prepared in their native land. But it is reasonably clear how chili was popularized. The credit must go to the cattle trail cooks and certainly to the Chili Queens of San Antonio. As a food, how important is chili to certain parts of American life and culture? The famous mountain man, Kit Carson, thought of chili when he supposedly uttered his dying words: “Wish I had time for just one more bowl of chili.” Will we ever be able to crown one single recipe as the best? I don’t believe so, and that’s fine with me. I think everyone has great fun trying to do so. The history of chili and its development makes me believe the great chili debate is destined to continue forever. Donna Hager has owned and operated an American-style restaurant for over two decades. What Are Some Easy Italian Recipes?

Monday, September 10th, 2007

By Andrew Krause A lot of the cuisine of Italy can be intimidating, with multiple techniques used to produce a dish, expensive ingredients and complex construction. Many new cooks take a look at some of the more classic “gourmet” Italian recipes and decide such cooking is better left to Olive Garden or Macaroni Grill. This is a mistake, as there are plenty of easy Italian recipes around. In every ethnic cuisine, the basic cooking is simple. Remember that for most of human history, cooking tools were very simple and the availability of complex cooking tools was unknown. There was only heat, a simple pan or two and some basic ingredients. Take, for example, Shrimp Scampi, one of the most popular Italian restaurant dishes. Done right, it is a marvel of balance, with the richness of butter and the taste of garlic, green onions and white wine. Actually, it’s a very, very simple dish! You just saut the garlic and onions in olive oil, add the wine, then the butter, then the shrimp. It’s not hard at all, and the results are fantastic. Lasagna, believe it or not, is another amazingly simple dish. The layers can look intimidating in the finished product, but it’s basically just a matter of making simple meat and cheese mixtures, then ladling them into a dish in layers separated by noodles. The great thing about lasagna is that it’s fairly foolproof. Get your layers out of order? Forget to put the cheese in one layer? It really won’t matter all that much once everything’s baked together. And, for dessert, don’t forget the cannoli (hey, it was good enough for “The Godfather,” right?) You can buy cannoli shells at most bakeries, which removes what for most people is the tough part. The filling is simply a mixture of cheeses and flavorings which is then piped into the shells and decorated. You won’t believe how simple it can be! There are hundreds of easy Italian recipes out there. All you have to do is get cooking. The Joy of Coin Collecting

Sunday, September 9th, 2007

By Jill Kane Children are collectors. Whether its books, stamps, feathers, shells, match labels, baseball cards, hello kitty products or Pokemon cards, children make a hobby of whatever is the rage at the time. Collecting coins is a passion with many. The interest could start because everybody else is collecting coins - perhaps a chance acquaintance gives you a few coins from a foreign land that kindled your interest. There is nothing more enthralling to a prospective coin collector than handling currencies of places hes never been to. It fires the imagination and often starts a life long pastime numismatics. Children find methods to enhance their collection. The easiest way is in school where they swap coins with fellow collectors. The more countries he has coins from, the greater the pride of a child. Numismatics is an interesting way to learn about other countries. It doesnt always end at school, however. Many years later the collection invokes a host of pleasant memories associated with school and it seems almost unbelievable that you could have collected so many coins at that young an age. As children it may be fun, (a few lose interest after a while), but coin collecting can be a serious business among adults. Searching for a particular coin can mean traveling halfway round the world. Coins that are no longer in circulation are treasured. Coin collectors hunt down special coins. For instance, ones that were minted to remember a historical event or to commemorate a red-letter day for that country would be a prize to the keen collector. Sometimes coins come out of the mint flawed. Such coins are much sought after. They are valued for these very defects. The 1943 vintage steel penny with zinc plating is worth much more than its face value. When the number of coins minted is restricted, the value goes up. These become collectors items. Collectors also search for coins that have long gone out of use. When evaluating coins, consideration is given to the state the coin is in and whether it is the genuine article. Some collect coins as a hobby while others are keen professionals. The latter invest in coins as others would in works of art or vintage wines. With these avid collectors, coins made of precious metals are an attraction. Of course, they have to pay exorbitantly high prices for them. They frequent auction houses and are in touch with other coin collectors with whom they strike bargains to get a desired coin. If its the jingling of coins that gives you satisfaction; if like Silas Marner you enjoy the feel of metal as the coins fall through your fingers, or if on looking at a countrys currency you are filled with enchantment, numismatics is the hobby youre looking for. Whether you wish to make just a hobby of it or pursue it is as an investment, is entirely up to you. Relationship Advice: The Power of Capitulation

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

By Jeff Herring Learning how to capitulate can be one of the best skills for your relationship. But you know what? I can hear it now: “But isn’t capitulation just giving in and being co-dependent with someone?” Well it can be. Especially if it is done on a regular basis over time. Over the course of a long term love relationship there are times when the best thing to do is try it the other person’s preferred way. The capitulating partner basically says “Our relationship and our happiness are more important to me than this issue. Let’s try it your way.” Another way to look at it is there are times when an issue is very important to one person and of little importance to the other person. In this case, because it is not important to you, the other person can do things their way. The last guy of the group of guys with whom I grew up did not marry until he was almost 40. Let’s just say he was fairly set in his ways. When I asked him how things were going after the first year of marriage. His response showed a great deal of wisdom for the first year of marriage: “I finally figured out that the sun will come up tomorrow if we try it her way.” That is not co-dependency, that is called cooperation. Cori’s Creations - Salmon Burger Atop Veggies

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

By Cori Swidorsky Theres nothing more fun then being creative with food and eating healthy at the same time. I had bought frozen salmon burgers to just keep in the freezer for a quick, easy meal. An easy way to eat a salmon burger is to eat it like a regular hamburger, but since I like to get creative, I experimented a little. You can either buy the frozen salmon burgers or you can make your own. I havent attempted that yet but plan on it. Im not that crazy about the frozen ones, could be the brand though. Ok on to creating… (serving based on 1 person)… Now the veggies can be switched if you dont like something you can replace it with something else or just leave it out. 1 salmon burger sliced onion ( use as much or little as you like) half a red pepper sliced in long thin pieces half a yellow pepper sliced in long thin pieces about a cup of broccoli shredded mozzarella grated parmesan cheese Olive oil In a small pan cook the salmon burger. After its cooked take off the heat and sprinkle some shredded mozzarella cheese on top. Then cover the pan for a few minutes so the cheese melts on top of it. In another pan heat some olive oil on medium heat. Put in sliced onions, peppers and broccoli and saut. Pour a little more olive oil on so it doesnt seem dry. I add a little bit of salt for flavor, you can use no salt or any other seasoning to your liking. Keep mixing the veggies so they dont burn, and cook for about 5 to 8 minutes. I like the veggies a little crunchy with the salmon burger so I dont cook them too long. Spread veggies on a plate, put a little more olive oil over them and then sprinkle some parmesan cheese on top. Place the salmon burger on top of the veggies and dig in! You get your protein with the salmon burger, your carbohydrates with your veggies, protein and fat with the cheeses and more healthy fat with the olive oil. Its a well rounded meal; satisfying, healthy and delicious. What better way to change your style of eating to a more healthy way then to be creative, enjoy experimenting. Smile your way into a better eating style for yourself. Cori Sachais Swidorsky Cori_informingwomen@msn.com http://www.informingwomen.com I Reside in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.
