The Simple History of Dollhouses

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

By Veronica Scott The history of dollhouses is one that has led to the delight of children as well as adults. It is believed that the origin of the dollhouse can be dated back over 400 years, although true documentation did not begin until much later in the 1800s. Regardless of when the dollhouse was first introduced, the history is rich with the stories of the children and adults who have been swept away by the magic of the dollhouse. 1) It is believed that dollhouses originated as early as the 1500s. At this time, it was only the children of wealthy aristocrats who were given such a spectacular toy. These dollhouses were not often designed based on the mansions and castles of the aristocrats homes, but were certainly more ornate than the houses of commoners. At this time they were used to provide the children with entertainment and nothing more. 2) It wasnt until the 1800s in Germany that dollhouses began to be manufactured on a large scale. While the houses and furnishings were still handmade, they became more elaborate thanks to newer and more intricate tools that were available. These dollhouses were made for the masses, so that not just children of the wealthy could own them. While they were still out of reach of those children with little money, families with some means were able to give their children a beautiful dollhouse. 3) Throughout the years, dollhouses have silently taught children about family life and growing into adulthood. They have also provided a creative outlet for the imaginations of generations of children. Dollhouses are often passed down from generation to generation. This allows for families to spend time together and even play together. It can be a wonderful experience between parent and child. 4) At some point, although a specific time is unknown, dollhouses transcended from a childs toy into a valuable possession and collectable. Dollhouses were played with less and displayed more behind glass. Each ornate piece became more valuable as time went on. This still continues today. There are an abundance of dollhouse museums that showcase the true beauty of these collections and also the history behind them. 5) Children today are not left without the magic of the dollhouse, but it has changed dramatically over the years. Barbie introduced the world to her Dream Home and since then, most children are presented with dollhouses made of plastic. While these make wonderful toys, there is certainly something lacking from the beautiful wooden dollhouses of years ago. These dollhouses come complete with furnishings and dolls. This takes a bit of the adventure out of finding new treasures to place in the dollhouse. The history of the dollhouse is not very complex, but neither is the joy that these toys can bring. The dollhouse has given children endless hours of entertainment and adults the chance to create a beautiful collection of miniatures. Regardless of where the future of dollhouses goes, it is sure that dollhouses will be beloved by all. Learn more about the fascinating world of miniatures. Sarbanes Oxley Compliance - Will Tighter Controls Work?

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

By Earl Powers Sarbanes Oxley act had been levied for tighter controls and stricter regulations for company’s internal controls. According to the Sarbanes Oxley compliance companies with market capitalization of more than $75 million need to file their financial reports by the June 15th. This date was alter amended up to 15th November. All other companies need to files their financial return for any fiscal year by 15th July. Sarbanes Oxley compliance with section 302 requires any CEO or CFO to certify the accuracy of annual or quarterly financial reports for the company. Any inaccurate or falsified facts are subject to penalty under law. This section also makes a CEO or CFO to establish and maintain internal controls. It also makes them eligible to evaluate these controls and measure their effectiveness. As per Sarbanes Oxley compliance, a CEO or a CFO is eligible to report any deficiency in the design and operations of internal controls. They can report any fraud and rectify any errors in the system of internal controls. Sarbanes Oxley compliance with section 404 requires the company’s annual report to carry a report on internal controls of the company. This report on internal controls as per the Sarbanes Oxley compliance should state the role of management in maintaining and establishing total internal controls in the financial system of the company. In case of IT companies, they are also required to be in Sarbanes Oxley compliance while filing their financial reports for any fiscal year. An IT person with business perspective can spearhead the compliance effort of any IT project. IN case of IT companies the internal controls need to be broken up in to two categories of general controls and applications controls. As per the Sarbanes Oxley compliance for an IT company it is required to evaluate the systems processes that end up effecting key controls over financial reporting. A good idea to implement Sarbanes Oxley compliance is to begin with simple and normal Sarbanes Oxley compliance controls. Then one should work backwards to determine the systems and processes that need to be documented in the financial report. In case of companies where the work is outsourced the Sarbanes Oxley compliance needs to be documented in differently. This is because the total work is done by an external agency. This is also especially important because any external agency would never give any document or certificate like SAS70 Type II or similar report. In such a case the company is required to document the whole process that has been outsourced as if the whole process has been done internally and state all the internal controls and regulation applied on that process which has been outsourced. In some cases it is suggested that as per Sarbanes Oxley compliance that the IT department is required to hold the keys to maintaining logs, usernames and passwords for the financial controls. This is not mandatory for all companies. Usually an IT department is required to create the roles and finance department directs as to who would hold the keys to those roles specified. But some times it is risky to implement such a practice. This is because if the IT department reviews the logs and holds the key to manage them it might be possible that some important records would be deleted. Thus in such a case the Sarbanes Oxley compliance states that the usernames and passwords etc should be with the IT department and finance department should have the last word on the same. By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Deshawn_Jon]Deshawn Jon Some handsets are born to inspire, and the all new Nokia 8600 Luna is one of the creed…it is constantly attracting a lot of consumer attention towards it. This mobile phone is certainly high on fashion and has a lot of ‘X’ factor that is pulling a good deal of clientle towards it. To review this handset in detail, Nokia 8600 Luna looks like a distant cousin of the super high end Nokia 8800 Sirocco and looks quite stylish as compared to the latter. As far as the specifications are concerned, it seems that it is very well specified than the high end sirocco phone. Its smoked glass sliding panel looks very much appealing that unravels the numeric keypad underneath. The TFT display of this mobile phone unravels a spectrum of 256,000 colours through it. So overtly, Nokia 8600 looks quite impressive at its face value. Technically, Nokia 8600 works on Quad-Band GSM network that practically makes it work at every corner of the world, including the parts of America. Further, with the presence of features as GPRS, EDGE and Bluetooth, the connectivity looks like a real no problem in this case. This phone can easily browse the world wide web and also also send and receive e-mails through it. There is a high resolution 2 Mega Pixels camera, that is also present in this device that is able to store images with crystal clear quality. And the second standard feature of this high end device is an MP3 music player that plays music at your will. The inclusion of an FM radio also keeps you updated with the latest events around the world. The memory of Nokia 8600 seems meagre in dearth of an external card slot, however, its 128 MB user memory looks amply sufficient as well. Thus the Nokia 8600 Luna one of the high end mobile phones that not only look stylish but also consists of some of the best features of mobile telephony, which makes it a device worth it. Silica Supplementation For Healthy Bones

Monday, January 14th, 2008

By Judy Phillips Osteoporosis is an indicator of the aging process. As the calcium in our body structure leeches, our bones become brittle and weak. Using only a calcium supplement cannot remedy or stop this threatening and crippling disease because the body cannot absorb and make use of the calcium without the presence of Silica. Data suggests that, instead of affecting healing, supplemental mineral calcium, in contrast, speeds up the leeching away of bone calcium and thus accelerates the degenerative process of osteoporosis and similar diseases that affect the connective tissues in the human body. In the case of osteoporosis, Silica can alleviate the pain and may restore the bodys self repair process. Osteoporosis indicators attack women primarily after menopause, but the deterioration process starts much earlier in their younger days. Countless women are dying of fractures caused by osteoporosis compared with cancer of the breast, cervix and uterus combined. It is important to know that in osteoporosis, thinning of the bones takes place due to the insufficient manufacturing of the surrounding protein medium in which calcium salts first deposit. An insufficient amount of calcium in the bone matrix causes an enlargement of canals and spaces in the bones, giving the bones a porous, thinned look. The weakened bone develops into a fragile state and can be broken by a minor injury. The bones may even fracture from ordinary pressure or stress. For objectives of re-mineralization in damaged bones, it is advised that a sufficient Silica supplement be taken daily. Bones are composed of mainly phosphorus, magnesium and calcium, but they also include Silica. Silica deposits minerals into the bones, especially calcium. It hastens the healing of fractures and also diminishes scarring at the location of a fracture. A good deal of research evidence indicates that through a transmutation process, Silica is turned into calcium when it is needed. It is for that reason that some scientists mention Silica as a precursor to calcium. Even when calcium is insufficient, the body can turn Silica into calcium that the bones need. 8 Steps for Choosing the Perfect Groom’s Cake

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

By Heather Robinson You and your groom can stretch your creative minds when choosing your groom’s cake. You should have fun with it! Traditionally, the grooms cake was meant to be carried home by guests. For this reason, it was made with durable ingredients such as fruit. Yes, all grooms cakes were once fruitcakes! Unmarried females would actually sleep with their piece of cake! They reportedly would dream of the man they were supposed to marry! Guess what? You do not have to follow tradition anymore! It’s safe to say that your women guests will most likely forgo sleeping with a piece of your grooms cake! Today, groom’s cakes come in all shapes and sizes. So, how do you decide on your grooms cake? Here are a few suggestions: 1. Ask your groom’s advice. The final decision may ultimately be yours, but at least ask him his opinion before you throw down money on it. You probably do not want to end up with a grooms cake that the groom will hate. 2. Go bold! Consider bold cake flavors such as a rich chocolate fudge torte, red velvet or tiramisu that will complement your wedding cake. 3. Consider various cake flavors. Be open-minded about cake flavors. Consider these great cake flavors: hazelnut, pumpkin, coconut cream, almond, banana walnut and carrot to name a few. 4. Make a statement with fillings. Pleasantly surprise your guests with fillings such as praline, peanut butter, Irish cream, coffee or cappuccino! 5. To theme or not to theme. Your groom wants a cake that resembles a large mouth bass and you are not thrilled with the idea of a fish near your wedding cake! What do you do? You could just give in and give him what he wants. However, if the idea is just eating you away consider offering the grooms cake at the rehearsal dinner instead of the reception where only your close family and friends will see it! If the budget allows consider having two cakes - the fish cake can be for the rehearsal dinner and the cake of your choice could be for the reception. A bit of advice - try not to make the grooms cake a source of contention. When everything is said and done you will most likely feel regret for causing a rift between you and your husband over a cake. 6. Groom’s cake ideas. Two tiered cake with chocolate frosting adorned with chocolate covered strawberries and greenery, a tuxedo, a shirt and tie, John Deere logo or tractor, deer, a sports ball, the logo of his favorite sports theme, his company logo, a musical instrument, his favorite pet, a cake in the shape of his name, a cake in the shape of the state where he is from. The idea here is to be as creative as you wish! 7. Do not leave the table out. The table that the grooms cake sits on should be decorated as well. You could use greenery, fabric or strawberries. You could also use items that have meaning to the groom such as a childhood photo. 8. Cost saving tips. - Save money by purchasing your wedding cake and your grooms cake from the same bakery. Ask if they will offer you a discount. - Have someone make the grooms cake for you. - Make it a sheet cake. Sheet cakes are less expensive than tiered cakes. - Pay someone to bake and frost a cake, but ask a friend or family member to decorate it for you. - Skip the grooms cake altogether. There is no rule book that says you have to have a grooms cake. Have fun choosing your grooms cake. Be creative and offer your guests a unique cake experience. Whichever cake you choose it should be a reflection of you and your groom’s personality. Have fun with it and it will be a great addition to your wedding! Creating a Realistic Tradeshow Budget - How to Avoid Nickel & Dime-ing Yourself to Death

Sunday, January 6th, 2008

By Susan Friedmann Having a realistic tradeshow budget is crucial for your exhibiting success. Its imperative to include all of the costs associated with exhibiting in your financial plan, yet many exhibitors fail to take this crucial step. Its almost impossible to realize positive ROI when you dont know how much youre spending — and what youre spending it on! If you ask most exhibitors what they think the largest expense associated with tradeshow participation is, chances are theyll tell you the display space. Its true that exhibiting space is expensive. That 10X10 booth can set you back a pretty penny — and price tags go up for larger spaces and prime locations. However, exhibiting space itself is generally only 30% of the total cost associated with exhibiting. That 30% of your budget is fairly fixed. A fabulous negotiator might be able to get show management to shave a few hundred off the price of exhibit space, but thats the exception rather than the rule. Instead, youll want to concentrate on that other 70% of your budget. The expenses that make up the bulk of your participation cost are, to some degree, variable. Theyre under your control — which means, with time, planning, and oversight, you can keep them down. The lower your costs are, after all, the easier it will be to generate a positive ROI on your show! The reality is, however, that most exhibitors dont pay close attention — or any attention at all! — to some of the items that make up the remaining 70%. The cost of their show creeps steadily upward, bit by bit, as small charges mount up and up until theyre a sizable chunk of change. This is particularly common among new exhibitors — although it also plagues seasoned pros who fall prey to the assumption trap. This is when an exhibitor assumes that things will be done this year the way theyve always been done previously. Like all assumptions, this one can prove costly! Here are some of the items that make up that 70%, as well as some thoughts on how to keep these costs manageable. Display Materials Your display can make your show: attractively presenting your merchandise in an eye-catching and innovative way helps capture attendee interest and draw them to your booth. However, you want to make sure that youre not overspending on your display. Theres the initial cost of your display, not to mention the storage and maintenance expense. Consider renting or leasing a display (especially if you are a first-time exhibitor or only attend one show a year): you can often get a high level of customization while saving money and reducing headaches. Freight Shipping displays, products, promotional literature, giveaway items and all the other show stuff to the tradeshow can eat up a lot of money. Consider your shipping options carefully. Take the time to do some comparison shopping. Who can offer you the best deal and ensure timely delivery? It does no good to save money if your material arrives after the show closes. Often, shipping companies have experts on staff who can help your crew pack material in the most cost-efficient manner possible. Again, a minor point, but one that can save you big money. Show Services Read your exhibitor manual! In there, youll find information detailing how and when you need to sign up for show services — items like electricity, floor coverings, and so on. The earlier you sign up, the more youll save. On average, costs go up by at least 25% for these services after the initial deadline passes. The closer you get to the actual show, the more youre going to pay — and if you forget about needing utilities until you arrive on the show floor, youll pay top dollar. This is one clear instance where planning ahead will save you a substantial amount of money. Pre-show Promotion Pre-show promotion is critical to your success. Show management often offers several free and low cost promotional venues: explore your options. This may include participating in a product display area, an Artists Alley, having your name included in category listings in the directory, website advertising and so on. Always consider: will participating in this effort help me reach the target audience Im trying to reach? If you sell widgets and the show organizer is putting together a directory listing of Widget Sellers online and in the guidebook, and charging $35 to participate, it may be the best $35 youve ever spent. Booth Staffers Transporting, lodging, and feeding booth staffers can eat up a considerable chunk of change. Most people have a tendency to live a little grander when theyre on the company dime — you know they dont order the $65 steak dinner at home! Keeping your corporate culture in mind, you may want to introduce some restrictions into the booth staffing budget. Offering per diem meal allowances is one way, requiring receipts is another. Explore lodging options: some hotels offer convention specials if you can book early enough. Again, pre-planning is your best friend. Travel costs can fluctuate wildly, based on fuel prices and other variables beyond your control. Again, giving yourself enough time in the schedule to find good transportation deals can help control costs. They say time is money. Thats certainly true when it comes to the tradeshow arena. By planning ahead and allowing yourself enough time to explore options, sign up for services, promote your participation, and other critical steps, youll be able to enjoy maximum results for minimal expense! Container Gardening Tips For Everyone

Friday, January 4th, 2008

By Mary Hanna All of us, at one time or another, has seen a display of container gardens with flowers or vegetables at a friend’s home or in a nursery center. Many mistakenly think that it took a lot of effort or was done by professionals. That is far from the truth. Container gardens are just as easy as outside gardens and in some way s even easier to maintain. Anyone that loves to garden can plant and raise a container garden even those with limited space, even apartment dwellers. You can create a beautiful garden with just a few container gardening tips. Start out with a plan. You need to know what you are going to plant, a container garden flower or a container garden vegetable. You may want to concentrate on an herb container garden. It is important to know this so you can choose the right size container for the plants. The number one container gardening tip is to choose a pot that has sufficient space for soil and the plants. Vine type plants will need a large, deep pot to grow over. If you are planning on a large plant you will need a wide passed container for balance. Keep reading, there are more container gardening tips to come. One thing to keep in mind is that you must have adequate drainage in the container that you use. No plant likes to have “wet feet”. The type of soil you use in your container garden is an issue too. Most experts on container gardening tips say that you should use potting soil. While some gardeners have had success using the soil from their outside gardens, it is not recommended. Potting soil is preferred mainly because it will not compact letting more water to the root system over the growing season. Here it is important to do some research and plant like minded plants together. Your plant groupings should consider water needs, sun needs and fertilization needs. An essential container gardening tip is to pay attention to the plants watering needs. If you get a very hot streak and your container garden is outdoors on your patio you will need to water daily. If this is your first venture into container gardening, choose drought resistant plants. Plants in container gardens can’t reach out for other avenues of water supplies so it is up to you to make sure they don’t get thirsty. You will come to love your container garden but plants only last so long. If the plants you are growing in your container garden become less productive change them out. With container gardening you are the one to decide how your gardens will be in bloom. It is true that you can manipulate your plants by moving them around or taking them from the inside to the outside, or vice versa. There is one thing that you must be diligent about and that is pests. If you find a container that has an infestation, isolate and treat it immediately. Do not use harsh chemicals on the plants. If it is an indoor container garden the chemicals could harm pets or children. Here is a natural pesticide that will keep the bugs in check: In a jar, combine 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid and 1 cup vegetable oil. Shake vigorously. In an empty spray bottle, combine 2 teaspoons of this mixture and 1 cup water. Use at ten-day intervals (or more often if needed) to rid plants of whiteflies, mites, aphids, scales, and other pests.
